ETH and Auxiliary Generators progressing at Bowers Electricals of Heanor
| Tha Auxiliary armature is seen following cleaning, baking and repainting, it is seen mounted on a temporary shaft that was used to mount it on the lathe for undercutting. The commutator is at the far end and has been masked to protect it from paint. |
| The Auxiliary Generator field windings are seen following initial cleaning. |
| Another view of the Auxiliary generator field windings and case, the other Auxiliary Generator case is seen to the left on the floor. |
| All of the brush boxes have been thoroughly cleaned and overhauled as seen above, also in the picture is one of the brush box mounting clamps which has also been cleaned and painted. |
| The brush box mounting plate from the Auxiliary Generator has been cleaned and repainted, and a start made on refixing the overhauled brush boxes. |
| A close up of two of the overhauled brush boxes on the Auxiliary Generator brush box mounting plate. |
| Each brush box has a number on it, indicating it's position on the mounting ring. |
| At this stage the ETH Generator was more advanced than the Auxiliary. The armature has already been cleaned and baked, as has the field windings and case. The armature has been refitted into the field windings and the brush box end plate refitted. |
| The generator set has been fitted with two new bearings, at this stage only the one at the brush box end had been fitted, which is seen above, covered in a liberal coating of grease. |
| The fan end plate has been cleaned and repainted, but was still awaiting fitting of it's new bearing, and still needed fitting to the field winding case. |
| Above is seen a close up of the refurbished brush boxes in the ETH generator, also showing the new PTFE insulators that have been fitted. At this stage the comutator was still covered in masking, hence the red colour, and the brush boxes were still awaiting fitting of the new carbon brushes. |
| Above is seen a close up of one of the fingers of one of the ETH brush boxes, showing the level of finish that has been achieved. |
| A close up of the ETH Generators connection box which has been cleaned and painted, but is still awaiting the connections to be remade. |
| The fan end of the ETH Generator is seen in the process of being cleaned up following painting. At some stage in the past the machine had been varnished without having the end plates masked up, resulting in varnish being on the mounting surfaces. As this needed cleaning off anyway, Bowers didn't mask this area, and were in the process of cleaning the varnish and paint off at the time this picture was taken. |
| Above is seen the fan from the ETH Generator which has been thoroughly cleaned and repainted and awaits refitting. |
| The ETH Generator for Renown is seen stripped down, this has proved a useful template to assist with the refurbishment of the generator set for Repulse. Once Repulse's generator set is completed, this one will be put back together with a good Auxiliary Generator, and put to one side to await its turn in a few years time. Unfortunately, this will be a far larger job as the ETH has significant damage to it's armature, as seen in the next picture. |
| Damaged ETH Armature for Renown, unfortunately these machines are rare, and the other ETH Armature owned by Renown Repulse Restoration Group is also in a poor condition, which will force a significant repair when a machine is overhauled for Renown. The Auxiliary is less of a problem being common with a Class 37. |
