We successfully tendered for a complete Class 50 power unit and main generator from Sea Containers in 2005. This unit was removed from 50008 Thunderer during the aborted overhaul of that loco for operation overseas. Although complete, the power unit had high engine hours and required some work to make it suitable for the thorough overhaul we are performing on 50030. With this in mind, in 2007 our mechanical restoration team prepared a list of items needed to refurbish the unit and return it to "zero hours" status. We then launched an appeal to our membership to fund the overhaul through sponsorship of individual components - the results of which have been excelent, with only 58 items left to be sponsored.
