Class 50s have been spotted in non-railway media. If you can think of any we have missed out email Bryan Jones using the contact form. Look forward to hearing from you.

Program Role
The Professionals Picture the opening scene : Paddington station, spring 1978, and 50 010 'Monarch' rolls into platform 9 with the Up Midnight from Penzance, an old blue GUV van heads a rake of Mk1 Sleeping Car stock, a shifty looking geezer alights from the train and makes his way towards 'The Lawn'. Cut to a shot of a black cab following him down the platform, with another named 50 resting on the stops.

The taxi drivers window opens and we see a gun with a silencer, the man from the train drops down dead - cue classic title sequence and music. We now see a panoramic shot of Paddingtons mighty platforms taken from the west end footbridge, as yet another blue class 50 drifts light engine along the now empty platform 5. Also in shot are a brand spanking new HST and several rakes of Mk1 and Mk2 Inter-City stock. The camera then takes us onto platform 1 where we see George Cowley taking to an old guy in a bad suit, standing next to 50 049 'Defiance' as it rests on the stops after bringing in a commuter train in the rush hour (probably an Oxford or Newbury job), the passengers trying not to look into the camera as they almost knock over Gordon Jackson.

In an earlier episode, Bodie and Doyle are seen in a car by the side of Southall station as a 50 hauled express runs by on the Up Main.

Only Fools And Horses Del Boy waiting at Waterloo station the camera pans round to briefly show two 50s at th blocks
Quadrophenia Towards the end, the main character goes to Victoria Station (Paddington was the stand in) for a train to Brighton and their is a 50 on the blocks.
Cracker 50008 'Thunderer' was used during the filming of 'Cracker' episode, called 'One Day A Lemming Will Fly", whilst it was based on the East Lancashire Railway in early 1993, shortly after being preserved by Pete Waterman.

The scenes were shot in the confines of the old BR Electric Car Shed yard at Bury (now the loco works), which at the time was still owned by BR, along with a rake of NSE Mark 2s, and filming took about three days, allowing the engine to warm up sufficiently for the exhaust to run clean, as it was running for long periods on each day!

The 50s and 60s in Living Colour An unrefurbished fifty appeared for about two seconds in "The 50s and 60s in Living Colour", a program about the 1950s and 1960s. The film apparently came from the British Transport Film Commission's archives
Inspector Morse 50040 'Leviathan' passed Morse and Lewis whilst they were walking in a field (most probably near Oxford) on NSE stock in the late 80's.

As Inspector Morse was filmed in Oxfordshire there are bound to be more cameo appearances - any offers?

Top Gear 50040 'Leviathan' appeared on Top Gear in October(?) 1987.

The article on the show was about the Birmingham Wheels race track near Adderley Park. The scene began with the camera pointing at the city skyline and panning down to a 50, headlight blaring towards the camera.

The cameraman follows the 50 as it appraoches and passes revealing that it is 50040 and even the screams of bellowing Midlands based 50 bashers can be heard (including myself). The camera then lands on the presenter. I remember when I saw it, he was jibbering about going 'from one form of horsepower to another'. Cue loads of Karts storming round the racetrack.

The Beta Band The cover of 'The 3 EP's' has a quite reasonable painting of a pre-refurb 50 on load 5.
